Couples Therapy
It seems like we keep having the same old fights…
This is the most common thing I hear when partners come to me for therapy. In a partner relationship, the experiences of our past are always at play, often coming up over and over until we feel lost in a cycle.
Little things turn into big things on a regular basis.
Kids come along and it seems like the connection is hard to find.
Misunderstandings pile up.
Trust is damaged or lost.
I work with couples to help identify their cycles and patterned behavior, restore hope and connection, and build intimacy through experiential work together.
So how do we do that? I start by hearing about your families of origin to give me a knowledge base around your attachment styles. Then, we build our toolbox of practical communication skills, techniques to avoid conflict or escalation, and strategies for resolution. To do this, I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and structural therapy (setting boundaries, communicating clearly, and goal setting), emotion focused therapy (EFT) (identifying and empathizing with feelings), and attachment based therapy (practicing trust and vulnerability to heal hurts from the past).
I have experience and competency working with folks in most places on the rainbow of queerness, nonmonogamy, and blended families.

“We have nothing but love for each other. Unfortunately, we did have a major communication/connection problem. Sarah helped give us a safe place to have tough conversations with modeled language that helped us get our points across in a way the other could actually understand. We have never been closer… we still have a lot to learn but I’m grateful for Sarah’s guidance as we continue to grow together.”

“Sarah creates a really warm and safe space in which to be vulnerable and do the important work of strengthening your relationship. She was able to help us get past our over intellectualizing and tune into our underlying emotions. Now our communication is far more open and honest and we both make space for another's feelings with so much more ease. We feel like we gained so much from our time with her and are so grateful!”
I am dedicated to working with couples to shake up and shore up their relationships, no matter where you are.
